Keen to have comprehensive monitoring undertaken, particularly in light of the five-year review, I concentrated my efforts on this task. I was delighted with the baseline monitoring of marine communities (first year) and assessment of indicator species (second year) carried out under Steve Wing and consultant Kay Booth. The guardians also rescued the government’s recently abandoned programme for containing the exotic invasive kelp Undaria pinnatifida in the fiords, imploring the minister to continue the programme when presenting him with their first annual report in 2006. The second annual report highlighted continued progress on this front, as did the strong support of the associated agencies. Statements by these agencies, appended to the annual reports, testify to the overall success of this initiative to sustainably manage the magnificent fiords of Fiordland.127
